A SLOAN personality test summarizes five Big Five traits in a code such as SCOAI or RLUEN. TypeMyVibe offers a free 50-question quiz, scored on your device, with no signup. This guide explains the letter pairs and the limits of that shorthand, so you can understand the scores behind your result.

What is the SLOAN personality test?

SLOAN is a five-letter shorthand for the Big Five traits. The letters describe a lean toward Social or Reserved, Limbic or Calm, Organized or Unstructured, Accommodating or Egocentric, and Inquisitive or Non-curious. Two options in each of five slots produce 32 possible codes. They are convenient summaries of continuous traits, not 32 sharply separated kinds of person.

Take our free Big Five / SLOAN test for your own code: 50 statements, about six minutes, with no signup or email. Your free result includes five trait scores, the nearest alternative code and a linked profile. It scores in your browser; the numbers describe a position on our scales, not population percentiles.

The SimilarMinds SLOAN overview explains the original Global Five notation. Our quiz uses its own questions and scoring; it is not the SimilarMinds test or a standardized clinical inventory. If you already have a code, the notation below will help you read it without retaking a quiz.

How to read the SLOAN notation

Read the letters themselves: S/R · L/C · O/U · A/E · I/N. S and R are opposite poles; changing S to lowercase s does not turn Social into Reserved. In SLOAN+ notation, letter case can describe strength, but our basic quiz displays a five-letter code with separate scores to show how close each trait is to the midpoint. A small difference around that midpoint can flip one letter without implying a dramatic personality change.

Extraversion

S / R — Social / Reserved

S indicates the more outgoing pole; R the more reserved pole. The score shows the lean, while the letter is a compact summary.

Neuroticism

L / C — Limbic / Calm

L marks greater emotional reactivity; C a calmer lean. These traditional labels are not a mental-health diagnosis.

Conscientiousness

O / U — Organized / Unstructured

O indicates more structure and follow-through; U a more spontaneous or less structured lean. Neither describes ability by itself.

Agreeableness

A / E — Accommodating / Egocentric

A points toward cooperation and accommodation; E toward a more direct, self-directed stance. Treat the traditional names as labels, not moral judgments.

Openness

I / N — Inquisitive / Non-curious

I marks the higher Openness pole; N the lower pole, often a preference for familiar, practical interests. This is not an intelligence score.

Stack all five letters together and you get 32 possible codes — including the one that happens to spell out the name of the system itself. The SLOAN code (Social, Limbic, Organized, Accommodating, Non-curious) is a real, ordinary combination that plenty of people actually land on. For the full breakdown of every letter against its OCEAN counterpart, plus the history of how the Big Five was discovered rather than invented, see the Big Five (SLOAN) guide. If you want to see two codes contrasted side by side, the SCOAI and RLUEN deep-dives are a good place to start — near-opposite profiles that show how far the 32 codes actually spread.

SLOAN test vs. other Big Five quizzes

SLOAN names the result format, not one universal questionnaire. Different item banks and scoring rules can give different numbers. Our 50 statements cover five traits, with ten items per trait and a balance of forward and reverse wording. Read the dimensions alongside the code: two people can share five letters while sitting at very different points on the underlying scales.

A code hides the distance

A score barely above the midpoint and a score near the end of the scale can share a letter. Read the numbers and the nearby alternative, not just the headline code.

Different tests use different scales

Do not compare two percentages as if they share a reference population. Our quiz scores are positions on its own scales, not percentiles.

Context changes answers

Consider ordinary patterns across settings. A single stressful day or unusual social situation may not represent your usual behavior.

Self-report and text each have limits

A questionnaire depends on your self-perception. A text analysis depends on the sample, audience and model interpretation. Neither automatically proves the other wrong.

A trait framework's research history does not validate every online quiz that uses its labels. We do not have a norming sample for this questionnaire or a demonstrated accuracy advantage over other tests. Use the result for reflection and conversation. It is not a diagnosis, an employment assessment or a measure of someone's worth. The labels summarize answers, not a fixed destiny.

How the free SLOAN quiz is scored

Rate the statements for your usual behavior rather than your ideal self or just today's mood. Think about more than one setting: being talkative with close friends and quiet in a large group is useful context, not a contradiction. Answer all 50 before comparing your five trait scales.

1. Answer the statements

Choose one of five agree/disagree responses for each of 50 original items. Your answers are saved and scored in your browser.

2. Read five scale scores

Ten items contribute to each trait. Reverse-worded items are scored in the opposite direction, and each total becomes a 0–100 scale position.

3. Compare your nearest alternative

Each trait selects one of its two letters. The narrowest margin identifies a nearby code worth reading alongside your result. Close scores mean the letter deserves less emphasis.

Suppose your scores sit close to the Social/Reserved midpoint but strongly toward Calm and Organized. The first letter is the uncertain part; it should not outweigh the clearer patterns. The result names a nearby code by flipping your narrowest trait. Read both profiles and keep the examples that actually fit. Retaking the quiz immediately to get a different label adds little information; reflecting on the ambiguous statements is usually more useful.

Why “famous SLOAN types” lists don't help much

You'll find pages online guessing at the SLOAN code of celebrities and historical figures. Treat those as community speculation at best — nobody has that person's real writing sample or their consent, so the guess is really just a guess about a public persona, not a measurement. The far more useful exercise is running your own words through the same lens, since that's the one dataset you can actually verify.

FAQ

Quick answers

Where can I take a free SLOAN personality test?

Use the free Big Five test at /test/big-five on TypeMyVibe. It has 50 questions, takes about six minutes and shows your SLOAN code without signup, email or a payment.

Is SLOAN different from Big Five or OCEAN?

SLOAN is a letter-code summary of five traits corresponding to the Big Five. OCEAN names the dimensions in a different order. A shared framework does not mean two quizzes use identical questions, scoring or validation.

What do the SLOAN letters stand for?

The pairs are Social/Reserved, Limbic/Calm, Organized/Unstructured, Accommodating/Egocentric and Inquisitive/Non-curious: S/R, L/C, O/U, A/E and I/N. The letter identifies the pole; lowercase does not turn it into its opposite.

How many SLOAN codes are there?

There are 32 basic codes: two choices in each of five slots. Traits vary continuously, so people with the same code can still differ substantially.

Are my scores percentiles?

No. TypeMyVibe reports positions on the quiz scales. There is no norming sample behind these scores, so a score of 70 does not mean you rank above 70 percent of people.

How accurate is this SLOAN test?

This is an independent quiz for reflection, without a validated accuracy percentage. Your answers, context and closeness to the midpoint affect the code. It is not a clinical or employment assessment.
